Coinciding with the feast of San Luis Rey de Francia, patron saint of the town of San Luis, is the much anticipated Sabutan Festival – a municipality-wide celebration held every August 22 – 25 to pay homage to the solidarity and industry of the people of San Luis.
The festivities highlight the wealth of talent and creativity of the townsfolk as well as the cottage industry that serves as the pillar of the local economy weaving. Local artisans create bags, mats, hats and other handicrafts from sabutan, a local pandan variety valued for its natural luster and durability. Sabutan design products are now exported to fashion houses and department stores across the globe.
Sabutan in all colors and forms has become the visual marker of this popular celebration. The main road is decorated with ornate arches, street performers in sabutan costumes highten the party atmosphere while the Bb. San Luis pageant showcases local beauty and sabutan fashion creations by local designers. in addition, various fun activities are organized during the festival to involve all sectors of the community, making it the best time to experience the brand of merry making San Luis has to offer.
